Top Rated Pinot of 2021 at New Zealand Wine Rater... 97 Points & 5 Stars!

Pegasus Bay Pioneers the Donaldson Family, quite literally put Canterbury on the wine map establishing the first vineyard there back in 1976. Being the first often means doing things differently, carving out your own future. And they've been pushing the boundaries of Kiwi winemaking for over forty years now.

Vergence refers to when the pupils of the eye look inwards and outwards during focussing - not just seeing the straight forward, the obvious. So this range is all about doing things differently, thinking outside the box and embracing new techniques, to evolve your craft and the quality of your product. The methods may change from vintage to vintage, or there may be several batches or 'marks', but you can be assured they will never be made looking straight!

The 2018 Mark 1 has been made with 100% whole bunch, carbonic and naturally fermented, Central Otago Pinot Noir. The bunches were added to a small amount of fermenting juice in tank, and sealed for a week to create an oxygen free environment. The juice releases CO2 starting carbonic fermentation inside the whole berries. After a week they were softly foot trodden, releasing their juices to begin alcoholic fermentation, and aged for a year in french oak.

The result is a delicious wine with poise and charm. Generous and complex fruit flavours like wild raspberries, wild thyme, and undergrowth notes entice the taste buds with charming tannins that warmly coat the cheeks. It's a seductive wine, with wonderful weight and an incredibly long lingering finish. Well done Pegasus Bay, this really sets the benchmark for this style of winemaking.

So, if you'd like to try a wine that pushes the boundaries, but from a producer with an undeniable reputation for quality, then grab this stunning example today at our fantastic New Year's offer of just $38.99 a bottle.

But be warned, you may never look at Pinot straight on again!

Description

Pegasus Bay are renowned for pushing boundaries and Vergence Mark 1, the latest addition to their portfolio is all about this concept. Their aim with this label is first and foremost to make delicious drinking wines, while also reflecting their commitment to constantly evolving their wine styles. The use of whole bunches is common with Pinot Noir, this 2018 wine is unusual for being made from 100% whole bunches. The bunch stems give spice, pepper, and tamarillo notes, adding vibrancy and complexity. And true to their word, this wine is very delicious and very, very drinkable.

Smells

a pure potpourri of aromas, red cherries, strawberries, tamarillo, cinnamon, cardamom, fennel and complexing notes of forest floor and milk chocolate.

Tastes

some 100% whole bunch Pinot Noir can be a little rustic with drying tannins, not so here. True to word the wine has poise, charm and is simply delicious. Generous, complex fruit flavours, wild raspberries, wild thyme, and undergrowth notes entice the taste buds with charming tannins that coat the cheeks giving warmth and structure, and the length goes on forever. This sets the benchmark for this style of winemaking. Drinking superbly now through 2030 and the ideal partner to mushroomy dishes and gamey meats.
