Super-Star, Central Otago Showcase

Veteran Greg Hay is at it again with an exciting new venture that includes a very impressive Central Otago Pinot for just $28.90

Greg’s involvement in the NZ Wine Industry is considerable. He helped set up Chard Farm with his brother, then co-founded Peregrine Wines and ran that for 17 years. But it seems he has saved the best till last ... with his latest brand - Putangi by Wet Jacket Wines.

The inspiration behind this new range comes from Greg’s two loves. World-class wines showcasing his beloved Central Otago, and spending time in the awe-inspiring beauty of Fiordland, which is where he learnt the inspirational story of Richard Henry “The Grandfather of Conservation” here in NZ.
A local conservationist in the late 1800’s who gave safe passage to over 800 birds at risk from the introduction of Stoats and Weasels, trapping them and rowing them across the waters to Resolution Island, in his dinghy named Putangi. The beautiful silhouette on the bottle rowing out in solitude is a dedication to a great man who worked tirelessly to save our rarest birds.

Discovering this new range has been such a delightful find for us. It can be a crowded market in Central Otago Pinot Noir up to $35, with many examples leaving you feeling somewhat lack lustre. Putangi Pinot Noir 2019 however is worth every penny, and then some. The type of super star quality wine we all love to discover and delight in tabling for special friends and family. This is a stellar example of sub-regional blending, showcasing all the best Central Otago has to offer.

The wine is made by Peter Bartle, with an exemplary 26 years of experience across NZ. Pete was one of the finalists for this year’s Gourmet Traveler Magazine NZ Winemaker of the Year and holds a lengthy list of accolades during his very successful career working for many well known wineries.

Putangi Pinot Noir is a multi-regional blend combining fruit sourced from Bannockburn, Gibbston and Alexandra. This wine quite literally blends all the truly outstanding elements from each sub- region, into a seemless stroke of brilliance all in the one bottle. It is a showcase of Central Otago, in all its glory!
Perfumed and fruity but with perfectly grippy tannins, with delicate pepper and spice notes. Ideal with game meats, oily fish and rich dishes.

This is a sensational Pinot made by a premium, boutique producer with only 600 cases produced and a no expense spared philosophy to their winemaking approach.
For an early start up venture we were so surprised by the undeniable quality, and value they offer. They have quickly found their way to the top of our must try list here at Fine Wine Delivery and we are so excited to introduce them to you. Check out our Blog about Putangi Wines by Wet Jacket if you'd like to learn more about this fascinating new venture...but don't forget to try this Pinot - we know you'll be as impressed as we were!

Putangi is the name dedicated to the dingy that Richard Henry used to try and save as many of our rarest birds, Kakapo and Kiwi from extinction from rodents. He rowed around the Dusky Sounds in his dingy named Putangi, collecting as many birds as possible, transferring them to what he hoped would be the safety of Resolution Island. Putangi is the Maori name for Paradise Duck. Certainly, a man of inspiration and dedication.

dark berry fruits aromas with black cherries, wild raspberries infused with cinnamon doughnuts, hints of vanilla and baking spices.

A salivating, textural Pinot Noir that has charisma and charm. Not your average up front and fruity Pinot, rather an exciting wine with vibrancy and sensual tannins that generously coat the entire palate and linger. Red fruit flavours persist with dusty cinnamon and vanilla with a stone sucking texture on the finish. Delicious and no hurry to drink as will age for 8-10 years or more. Gamey meats or pasta will go a treat with this wine.
