PIONEERING PINOT PACKS PUNCH

Too Good to be True, Otago Pinot Deal

Champion Pedigree Pinot, made from Otago's oldest vines. Hard to believe the value at just $20.90. Gold Medal and Five-Star rated already!

It must be the Pioneering Spirit of Central Otago that got into Bill and Gill Grant's blood, but these two trail blazing Vignerons were certainly at the front of the pack setting up Vineyards in the area back in 1973, and among the first to ever plant Pinot Noir there in the late seventies.

Nestled on their original root stocks, protected from Phyloxxera by a sandy base on the eastern side of the home block, these 30-40 year old vines continue to thrive year on year. Shaky Bridge is one of our all-time 'still can't believe it' deals. We couldn't believe our luck when we stumbled on such a bargain to begin with - over a decade ago, and we're still shocked that a Pinot of such quality isn't twice the price...like its peers!

These days the operation is owned and run by Bill and Gill's son. Dave, literally born on the Home Block and growing up planting many of the younger vineyards, pursued a career in mining that saw him settled in the outback of Australia for many years. An opportunity to return home in 1995 to build an onsite winery bought a career change with it, and he retrained in Winemaking through EIT Hawke's Bay. Dave's winemaking philosophy is simple - to let a wine speak for itself...to speak of its place, and that's exactly what we have here with the Pioneer Series.

Shaky Bridge are Alexandra specialists. They make wine from six different blocks, but all of these are within this distinctive sub-region. Alexandra is hot and dry, and the style of Pinot reflects the conditions with knock out ripe fruit, beautiful heady perfumes, and that all-time trademark of wild thyme.
The 2019 Pioneer Series comes from three of those blocks, with vines that range in age from 10-30 years old.

This is a classy wine filled with opulent seductive fruit, subtle game notes and just a tad richer than the previous Champion Trophy winning vintage. Its silky tannins and haunting perfume make it a wine that you will struggle to put down.

This is serious bang for buck and with Pinot, that is becoming a rare find indeed. It's always been a crowd pleaser for those of us in the know and hand on heart this rates up there for quality with wines twice its price.

Upgrade your mid-week drinking and bbq enjoyment - friends and family will thank you for sharing this little secret too. It's always a struggle to keep the shelves fully stocked on this wine...but at just $20.90, you'd best be quick!

Cheers, Jeff!

Description

The classic Alexandra perfumes of spicy fruits burst from the glass with absolute purpose in this 2019 Pinot Noir, reminding you that Shaky Bridge are in possession of some of the oldest vines in Central Otago (averaging 30-years and some up to 40 years old). Classy, opulent and sophisticated, it's silky and possibly just a tad fuller flavoured than the previous (Champion) vintage. This is a serious Otago experience at a very unserious price - almost too good to be true! Savour between now and 2025.

Smells

A haunting bouquet of spiced cherries, roses, wild thyme and summer plums.

Tastes

A voluptuous and full-flavoured Pinot with a very attractive silky texture, the tannins are refined and supple. This wine carries notes of opulent dark fruits that keep you reaching for your glass all night. Premium Otago Pinot drinkers can seriously bridge the quality gap between midweek and weekend drinking by indulging in Shaky Bridge... and do so through 2025! Made for cheese platters and pasta dishes.
