Description

With only 984 bottles produced, the Valli Burn Cottage Pinot Noir is getting scarcer each year. This, the fifth vintage of collaborative winemaking between Otago’s top wineries Valli and Burn Cottage is just as exciting as the first. The Pinot Noir comes from the Burn Cottage vineyard in Lowburn, handpicked at 23.2 Brix with 26% whole clusters in the ferment with 25 days maceration on skins. Otago’s 4-time world champion winemaker Grant Taylor tweaked the elevage slightly, using only French Oak coopers of Ana Selection, 20% new (you live and learn when working with a new vineyard). The result is another exciting Pinot that deserves to be cellared for best effect and enjoyed from 2020 onwards.

Smells

Wild red cherries and black plums, haunting florals over notes of summer hay, wild thyme, and warm earth.

Tastes

Highly complex and very intense, with lots of sweet cherry fruit and the silky tannins we’ve come to expect from Lowburn, it is quite harmonious already in its youth, with a long, layered finish. Still a baby, this should be cellared until 2024 and then enjoyed over the following 5 to 8 years. Enjoy with venison fillet.
