Description
Larry McKenna is a NZ winemaking legend who put Escarpment on the world stage, now retired but in the very capable hands of Tim Bourne. They have a reputation that is second to none for creating top NZ Chardonnay & Pinot Noir with the same ethereal textures, complexities, and elegance as seen in Burgundy. And this 2021 Escarpment is nothing less than sensational, and screams of White Burgundy yet costs a fraction of the price… Don’t delay, and don’t miss out, otherwise, there will be tears.
Smells
The aroma is captivating, that in itself is almost enough, smoky, roasted hazelnuts, grapefruit, hints of struck match, overlaying nectarines, and pears with an enticing herbal thread, all balanced with refined spicy oak nuances.
Tastes
Rife with yellow fruits infused with fine spicy oak, savoury/smoky Burgundy-like mineral complexities, creamy textural mouthfeel and perfect acidity adding poise to the rich finish. It tastes like freshly roasted popcorn with lashings of butter, rich and creamy in a full-bodied style, with class and style. Outstanding Chardonnay in a NZ meets Burgundy style... it will cellar superbly for at least a decade if well stored, only becoming rounder and richer with time.
