Esk Valley’s new Artisanal Collection Chardonnay is a “ Work of Art”! Never have we seen so much panache and character in a Chardonnay priced at $25. It obviously got Master Sommelier Cameron Douglas worked up to bestowing a well-deserved 95/100 rating, enthusiastically matched by our panel. Let’s amp the quality/value ratio up further at our new release price of $19.99, its simply off the charts!

The Artisanal Collection is a new range of fine wines in Esk Valley’s portfolio. Legend Hawkes Bay and Esk Valley winemaker Gordon Russell’s vision is to make a classic, delicious expression of Hawkes Bay Chardonnay with degrees of complexity and style. His undoubted artistry is on full display here in this soulful Chardonnay brimming with character, panache and quality.

The making of the wine...
The fruit is from coastal and inland vineyards... the two clones and contrasting terroir combining a gorgeous mix of rich stonefruit and flinty grapefruit. The dry 2020 season was one of Hawkes Bay’s finest ever... a little cooler... bringing precise flavours and acidity to the low yielding concentrated fruit. Both parcels were harvested separately and wild yeast fermented in French oak barriques followed by Malo-lactic ferment and extensive lees aging.

The wine itself...
Charming aromas of sun ripened Golden Queen peaches, wheat biscuits, vanilla pods and spice... surrendering to rosemary and toasty nuances. Total class with richness, power and finesse... where warmly concentrated white and yellow fruit titillates the senses, with pearl barley, cinnamon and spice further underpinned by exotic spices, vanilla and toast. The fine, crystalline acid thread compliments and harmonises the fruit, resulting in a multifaceted, exciting wine. Delicious drinking now through 2025, serve with pasta, salads or roasted white meats.

“Artisanal” roughly translated means “work of art”... which is precisely what this Gordon Russell inspired Chardonnay is! To be subjected to this level of quality and refinement circa $25 is a serious treat... so you would be certifiably crazy not to give it a try at our new release price of $19.99.

Enjoy, Jeff

2020 Esk Valley Artisanal Chardonnay
