Rod McDonald is masterful at his craft... previously “NZ Winemaker of the Year”. Te Awanga is his Hawkes Bay Estate and “The Loom” ... his flagship Chardonnay. Te Awanga vineyard is situated on the coast and like its neighbour Clearview... enjoys the warm Hawkes Bay summer ripening days with cooling nighttime sea breezes locking in higher natural acidity. Loom is local slang for the best wave of the day – an apt choice of names... as Loom is crafted to be the “best Chardonnay” of the estate. 100% old vine Mendoza clone Chardonnay was fermented and aged in 100% French Oak (40% new) ... the result is a rich, concentrated, powerful Chardonnay with ethereal mouthfeel and very impressive length. It will drink magnificently through 2025-2028... but is incredibly delicious already.
Smells
Yellow-fleshed nectarine, white peach, sweet vanilla, nougat, nuts, and subtle spicy oak.
Tastes
Powerful, rich, and complex with very impressive concentration of nectarine and peach with subtle grapefruit and lemon. An enticing array of toast, nut and smoky complexities permeate the mid to back palate. Ethereal throughout... its power is beautifully freshened by fine natural acids. Excellent with roast chicken and pork dishes. However much you buy, you won’t be able to keep it hidden away for very long.
