This high flying wine's award history runs longer than the road through the McLaren Vale itself. It's made by one of the valley's most awarded wineries, and crafted by a family that has been making wine there since 1966.
The Serafino story began in 1964 when a fresh faced Italian teenager Steve ( Serafino ) Maglieri arrived in Australia with just twenty dollars to his name, a small suitcase of belongings and a big dream. Inspired by his Great Grandfather back in Italy, Steve knew winemaking was what he wanted to do, and he set out with gusto to make it happen.
Two years later, alongside his Father Giovanni they purchased their first vineyard and planted traditional Italian varieties. Steve had the foresight to purchase his own land later in 1972 trading as Maglieri Wines, a venture so successful that a big Corporate came knocking with an offer Steve just couldn't refuse. The deal allowed Steve to trade up to an infinitely better site in 1999 known as McLarens on the Lake. It is now the 350 acre home of Serafino Wines complete with 5,000 tonne winery, bottling hall, Cellar Door and Restaurant, Hotel and Wedding/Function centre, and a must see if you're ever visiting McLaren Vale.
Serafino Black Label wines are crafted with medium to long term aging in mind. They are made to be varietally typical ie they want you to know this is obviously Cabernet, and not to be guessing about it. That has always been their success in competitions, as the hallmark characteristics of a variety stick out like a proverbial sore thumb. And this 2018 vintage is yet another Cabernet classic , and a clear cellaring opportunity for the astute buyer.
With a Gold Medal and Trophy for Champion Cabernet at NZIWS, and an outstanding 95 point rating and mention of a Special Value Wine in James Halliday's Wine Companion, this Cabernet is going places. It's made from the top 25% of fruit from their McLaren Vale estate and its chocked full of flavour, texture and complexity. Blackberry, plum, black olive and a kiss of mocha on the finish are balanced by silky fine tanins that have been tamed by twelve months of brand new french and american oak, followed by a further twelve months in one year old french and american oak. As James Hallidays says "the tannins are just as they should be".
This is an outstanding expression of Aussie Cabernet. It is powerful, but not just about power - with a very considered approach to balance, and layers of complexity that unfold with every sip.
It's $28 AUD at the cellar door and $27.99 NZD elsewhere right now, so our jaw dropping price of just $23.90 while stocks last make it an unmissable bargain. Cellar through to 2032, or decant and enjoy now for a Classic Cult Cabernet made by one of the best McLaren producers out there!
