NEAR PERFECT RELEASE OF A CULT CLASSIC!

Rated 98/100 Campbell & 5-Stars Cooper!

New Zealand's Most Awarded Winery has done it again with the superb growing conditions of 2019. An Iconic Keltern Chardonnay for the Cellar at just $77.99

Planted back in 1999, this site has become synonymous with quality Kiwi Chardonnay. Right off the bat from its very first release in 2002, Keltern Chardonnay has enjoyed unparalleled consistency, culminating in the near perfect 2019 vintage.

Villa Maria is undoubtedly NZ's Most Awarded Winery. And Keltern is one of those wines that has contributed tirelessly to its incredible medal tally over the years. This unique vineyard sits east of the warm sunny days of Maraekakaho, strategically positioned to enjoy a path of cool air from the westerly mountain range to retain its beautiful acid . It is an inland site buffered by the Ngaruroro River with its roots firmly in a former river bed with ancient silt loams layered over free-draining red metals and large gravel stones. They are mature vines that are meticulously cared for and thinned to a miserly one bunch per shoot. There is no expense spared in the vineyard to ensure a massive concentration of flavour, and a flawless balance of fruit and acid.

Likewise, the winemaking is a continuation of 'next level' investment with the fruit hand-picked, whole bunch pressed and wild fermented in French Oak of which a whopping 40% is brand new, and the balance is one to two years old. It is left for a further eleven months in the barrel, with weekly battonage for the full term.

Rich and highly concentrated with classic flavours of peach, nectarine, apple, fresh baguette and nutty characters. The heady fruit sweetness is balanced by perfectly ripe acidity, creating the hallmark 'Keltern' style of harmony and elegance. The text book growing conditions of 2019 have further defined this cult classic, emphasizing all that is there by nature and turning up the volume full boar. The results are a breath-taking wine, seamless in its youth but predicted to be sublime through to 2030 and beyond.

Secure as much as you can afford of this Iconic Keltern vintage. One for the ages, and a must have Kiwi Classic for the Cellar, especially at the unbelievable value of just $77.99 a bottle! Enjoy.

Description

One of the legendary NZ Chardonnay vineyards, alongside Riflemans, Craighall and Neudorf's Home Block. Keltern Chardonnay is always smoky and flinty in character, but this 2019 is even another step up! More generously fruited, a complete and complex wine showcasing the excellence of Hawke's Bay’s elite single vineyard Chardonnay from an outstanding vintage.

Smells

The classic Keltern nose, showing toast, fig, citrus, spicy oak, flint and stonefruit. Harmonious and sophisticated.

Tastes

Creamy, biscuity and refined, stony mineral nuances give an exhilarating lift to the palate, toasty oak giving great support to the nectarine and pink grapefruit core. Awesome as a young wine, demand always exceeds supply, so don't expect to be able to pick up an aged vintage on the shelf. If you want to experience this wine's full development, grab some now and cellar it yourself through to 2030 and beyond.
