Benchmark Pedigree meets Perfect Vintage

Iconic Margaret River Winery Leeuwin Estate, were one of the five founding wineries to establish the little known region back in the late 1960's, and have been instrumental in the region's global success today. In fact one single wine - Art Series Chardonnay, did much to establish them as a premium producer, when they were catapulted onto the world stage with Decanter Magazine's highest recommendation for their 1981 wine - only their third ever commercial vintage! And the accolades haven't stopped since, positioning this wine alongside the world's greats - only at a fraction of the cost of a white burgundy!

2018 has been touted as a perfect vintage in Western Australia. Long and warm, but consistently so with very few hot days where temperatures spiked above the average. This allowed for perfect ripening of the fruit ensuring a purity and concentration not seen in previous vintages, earning it Top Place for the Chardonnay Varietal Award in the 2022 Halliday Wine Companion, and a very consistent high nineties score across the board from top wine critics. There are many poetic reviews available for this stunning wine, these two sum it up well...

“Benchmark pedigree Margaret River chardonnay from the perfect 2018 vintage. Kaffir leaf, ocean spray, nectarine, yellow peach, custard apple and white peach are the start. Saffron curls, vanilla pod and freshly grated nutmeg frame saline acidity, crouched and coiled. Length of flavour extends across the palate in an endless procession of texture and complexity. All of the power, grace and excellence of previous years is here, amplified.”

98 points, Top Place Chardonnay Varietal Award. Erin Larkin, 2022 Halliday Wine Companion

"Let's put it this way. This is the closest I have come to awarding a wine 100 points...Stellar wine from a stellar vintage. The remarkable thing is, that this is a wine 100 percent barrel fermented in new French oak barriques with regular lees stirring for 11 months - and it certainly doesn't taste excessive, or even slightly oaky. It has such high-fidelity purity with complex seductive aromatics of vanilla bean and light oatmeal with a cutting minerality and spicy lift. But the palate, oh the palate. This is where things start to explode. Power, poise and persistence with a dry savouriness balancing the intense ripe fruit. It is such a long finish with an ever so slightly, charry finish completing a remarkable wine".

99-plus/100. Ray Jordan, The West Australian

As with all the truly great wines, there are only ever small allocations available for NZ, and they never stretch far enough.

Art Series is Leeuwin Estate's pinnacle Chardonnay with 2018 being the 42nd vintage and a recent recipient of 98/100 from well-known Aussie wine critic Huon Hooke and Erin Larkin (of James Halliday Wine Companion), as well as joint Top Chardonnay in the new 2022 James Halliday Wine Companion. Aged vines, possibly the world’s most consistent climate, uncompromising viticulture and winemaking. A pedigree of aging, this wine could well go beyond 30-years sealed under screwcap... providing you cellar it professionally. I recommend buying a few bottles of this hedonistic Chardonnay to savour over the next 10-30 years if well stored.

Elegant floral aromas with peach, pear, flint, brioche, nougat and seductive nuttiness.

Reminiscent of the greatest white Burgundies, very Batard-Montrachet as it explodes across the palate unleashing its powerful concentration and creamy layers of texture whilst retaining its poise. Artful in every sense of the word, it will magnify in complexity over 1-3 decades. Right now, lemon curd, fresh lime, white peach and grapefruit skin are infused with subtle oak complexities of cinnamon, nutmeg and hazelnuts… a window to its stunning tenure ahead in the bottle, as is its unerring length. Create your most hedonistic seafood or poultry dish to do it justice.
